Firefox 3, del.icio.us, and you

Firefox 3 users, rejoice! Today I’m pleased to announce a beta release of an enhanced version of our Firefox Add-on for del.icio.us that now has full Firefox 3 support while retaining Firefox 2 compatibility. While it is largely similar to the release version of our Firefox Add-on, there are a few nifty new features:
- Jump to Tag feature (press F2) allows you to quickly access tags and
  bookmarks using the keyboard
- New layout for saving bookmarks
- Preferences now in a separate dialog under Tools (which also can be
  invoked via the prefs button on the FF Add-ons pane)
- Status bar indicators for network activity, new links for you, and the del.icio.us website
- Classic mode for users who just want simple buttons without the overhead of sync
Like any beta release this Firefox Add-on is meant to provide you with a preview of upcoming features. Some of the features and interface choices, like Jump To Tag, are experimental and may change before we officially launch and we’re eager to hear your feedback on the changes, especially if you think we can do certain things better. If you have issues or comments, please let us know in the delicious-firefox-extension Yahoo! Group.

Download it here. Also, since this is prerelease software, please do not submit support requests via the normal channel- we have a Yahoo! Group for discussion of the Firefox 3 Add-on.

If you’re not already familiar with the extension, take a look at our Quick Tour which explains the basics. It hasn’t been updated to reflect all the new features but is a great way to get started.

Thanks for helping us test- we’ve built and upgraded these Add-ons based on lots of user feedback and we hope you enjoy trying them out.

who says librarians (and teachers) don’t like tags

Over the past year or two, I’ve been delighted to notice educators and librarians embracing Delicious both as a way to share bookmarks with each other and a way to help their students and patrons learn. This makes perfect sense to me as a college student because I bookmark and tag references for all my projects and I’d love to see similar collections from my professors and classmates.

I don’t know who first realized the potential of Delicious for education, but I’ve seen a huge amount of community documentation created by teachers and librarians to help each other understand what this place is, why it’s valuable, and how to use it. Here are some of my favorite bookmarks:
- Top 100 Tools for Learning — according to lists contributed by learning professionals, Delicious ranks first. Last year we were second only to Firefox.
- Library Journal explains why Tags Help Make Libraries Del.icio.us.
- 7 things you should know about Social Bookmarking (PDF) is a primer from a university perspective, written by EDUCAUSE.
- How Delicious is changing academic research: a PhD student says “Delicious is the Rome, Jerusalem, and Paris of my existence as an academic these days. It’s where I make my friends, how I get the news, and where I go to trade.”
- A PBS Teachers blog takes “a look at the wonderful world of del.icio.us”.
- A collection of links to libraries that use Delicious, including many university libraries, with additional links to resources and tools.
- All about social bookmarking tools on the Teaching Hacks wiki.
- Social bookmarking on the Classroom 2.0 wiki. A couple of us (Stephen Hood and Chris Kim) spoke about Delicious at the Classroom 2.0 conference in San Francisco a few weeks ago.

Greetings all and Happy New Year! (is it too late to say that now?) We know we haven’t updated the blog in a looong time but the team has been heads down working on the next version of Delicious We’ll have an update to share with you guys next week.

As mentioned here before, the del.icio.us team is presently in the midst of a major project: building a new platform which will speed up the site and help us grow even faster. At the same time we’re also taking a close look at our UI and exploring ways to make it both easier to use and more functional. Over the years we’ve heard a lot of feedback, both positive and negative. Many folks like the simple and terse nature of the site, while others take issue with certain elements of the design (shockingly, some of you think that light-blue-on-salmon-pink is not a good color combination; more shockingly, some of you think that it is). Our challenge then is to make del.icio.us better without messing up the stuff that already works.

We’ve been working on some new design ideas and recently conducted a series of usability tests to see if these ideas work. We brought in about a dozen people, both existing users and a few people who were new to del.icio.us. Yahoo! (our parent company) has some great facilities for this sort of thing which we basically moved into and hogged for about a week. It was a lot of fun for us (and, it seemed, for the participants), and we learned a lot from watching people use the site and try out our new designs. As we expected, we heard feedback all across the spectrum, and nearly all of it is proving deeply useful in our continuing work.

Here’s some stats from the tests:
- 20 participants
- Over 2000 post-it notes used
- 562 unique observations recorded
- Hundreds of design tweaks made as a result of feedback
- 62 cups of drip coffee and 23 lattes consumed
- Most disappointing thing overheard: “I don’t really get tags”
- Most gratifying thing overheard: "del.icio.us has totally changed my life"
- Funniest thing overheard: "I’m pleased; this new design doesn’t look like an angry fruit salad"
In the very near future we’re going to have a beta of the new design so we can get even more feedback (watch this space for announcements). Please also feel free to use this blog to share your thoughts about what you’d like to see different in del.icio.us. More cowbell? Less pink? Let us know.

If you have a TypePad blog, you can now make it easy for your readers to bookmark your stories on del.icio.us by automatically including a "save to del.icio.us" link in your post footers -- without having to learn a single line of template code. Just sign into your account, navigate to your blog's design tab, choose "Select Content" and configure your post footer.

In the past, we had a lot of questions from TypePad bloggers about how they could do this themselves, and instead of having them convert to Advanced Templates and copy and paste template code into their blogs, we wanted to save them the hassle and just do it as an option in the application.

If you're using TypePad's advanced template feature (and you know who you are), not to fear -- del.icio.us has lots of options for adding your own savebuttons to your posts. Hint: you can use the template code that del.icio.us has for Movable Type, it will work just fine in your TypePad blog.

It's super easy to use; just visit our setup page, and after a few clicks you'll be able add del.icio.us to your Facebook Profile page. The application lets you post a summary of your bookmarking activity to your Mini-Feed. It can also be configured to show your latest bookmarks so your friends can easily see what you've been reading.

Adobe Illustrator is one of my favorite design tools, and as part of the redesign of del.icio.us I’ve been using it in a number of interesting ways. For example, I’ve written JavaScript code to pull in and parse del.icio.us RSS feeds then automatically render my latest designs in Illustrator using real data. This allows us to rapidly iterate on the design well before anyone has to write any real code.

So I was very interested when the Adobe Illustrator team came to visit us a few months ago. It turns out that Illustrator users are constantly making excellent online descriptions of their tips, techniques, and tutorials, and Adobe wanted a good way to collect and share these with other users online and within Illustrator. So why not use del.icio.us?

Adobe’s first step was to set up a del.icio.us account and start collecting the best bookmarks on Illustrator they could find. They then integrated del.icio.us into Illustrator CS3 as part of their “knowhow” palette, thereby allowing users to tap directly into Adobe’s bookmarks.

To try it out within Illustrator CS3, select the “Window” menu then “Adobe Labs” > “knowhow”. From the “knowhow” panel you can see contextual help for the tool you are using and search the Internet for more help. You will then notice that one of the tabs has the del.icio.us logo on it, which points you to the bookmarks Adobe has collected. Alternatively, if you don't have CS3, you can also try out the “knowhow” palette on Adobe Labs or [knowhow.adobe.com] or of course you can always see all their bookmarks at [del.icio.us] .

If you have found or have created any Web pages that you think other Illustrator users would find useful, simply tag them “for:knowhow” and the Adobe team will review and add them to their collection for all Illustrator users to enjoy.

For the past few months, we've been working on a new del.icio.us Bookmarks extension for Firefox. We quietly released it to the addons.mozilla.org community to see what would happen, and we've been constantly working on it to make it great for our core community of users. Since that launch, we've received loads of great feedback and have been working non stop to address the biggest requests from the community.

After months of hard work, I'm pleased to officially announce the new extension. It has the same two buttons as the old one, but they do so much more. The biggest change is that we now integrate all your bookmarks right in the browser. From the new sidebar you can sort and search your bookmarks instantly, view tag intersections, and even modify your bookmarks. The new toolbar is also great - you can select what tags you want to see in your toolbar, show all the bookmarks with a given tag, and even view your bundles. Of course, livemarks and keywords are both fully supported.

If you still love the classic extension, not to worry, it's still around. Otherwise, visit our help page to learn more about the extension or just go ahead and install it! Feedback is always welcome, so come on down to our group to talk about the extension some more.

As mentioned recently in this blog, we’re working on a lot of improvements for del.icio.us. We’ve just posted a survey as a way to get feedback and opinions from you, the users. We want to make sure that we’re focusing on the right things, fixing what’s busted and not busting the stuff that already works. Did you know that well over half of the requests seen by del.icio.us are for RSS feeds? That means that people cruising around our site in browsers are actually in the minority, when it comes down to raw traffic. Instead, our heaviest hitters include personalized home pages, desktop news aggregators, and even stranger things.

With that in mind, it makes sense to remember that small changes can have a big impact. Thus, given that our feeds have been doing a decent job this far, they haven't changed much from their austere beginnings.

Decent isn't great, though. So, as the team's semi-official (and published!) feed junkie, I've been working on some small improvements. I've been looking into how our feeds are used and how to better streamline and present our information in different contexts. These improvements include features like:
- including tag descriptions in feed titles and descriptions where available;
- offering the ability to save bookmarks straight from your feed reader;
- displaying an up-to-date count of saves, without making items appear new again in feed readers;
- building more useful feed content with links to people, tags, and more bookmark details;
- providing more metadata where it seems useful, or less where it appears redundant.
And, this is just the start. We're rolling these changes out gradually, on a per-user-agent basis, and we're planning for more. So, if you don't see any improvements in your favorite feed reader yet—or if the changes haven't quite hit their mark for you—be sure to contact us and let us know!

Sometimes one word just isn't enough to know what a tag really means. For example, when I was working as an IT administrator for a non-profit agency, I was scrambling to find a free or low-cost tracking system I could use to manage their IT issues in a sane fashion. I went into research mode and bookmarked a lot of sites under my “issuetracking” tag. Now, looking back, I wish I could comment a little on that tag about what I found and what I ultimately decided to do... but how? Enter our latest feature: tag descriptions.

For any of your tags, you can now add a public title and description to appear at the top of the page. It may just be to remind yourself of what it is or to tell others more about it. To get started, just visit one of your tags and click “create description” (at the top). As always, we don’t presume to know exactly how you’ll use this or what about it will be most valuable to you, so we welcome your feedback and suggestions!

Normally this process takes seconds and is practically invisible but the load on our servers were much greater than we expected and they melted as a result.

We've unmelted the servers so those of you with missing bookmarks in your del.icio.us Bookmarks extension should be seeing them soon, as the issue will resolve itself. If you need immediate access to your bookmarks, go to Tools -> Options in Firefox, click the del.icio.us tab, and click "Sync Now". Otherwise, our servers and I would appreciate it if you waited, it should take no more than a few minutes for your extension to automatically grab your bookmarks now that we are up again.

Thanks for your patience and sorry about any problems this may have caused.

overdue new year's resolutions

We've been busy: since our announcement in september of our millionth signup, another half-million users have joined the fun. And because of this, we've been more quiet then I would like, and I want to apologize.

It feels that we've spent almost all of our time uncomfortably bursting at the seams; we've always been at pretty much close to capacity. We've worked very hard to keep the system as stable as possible and as fast as possible in that time. However, I feel that during this very exciting time for the team I've personally had less capacity for talking more openly to the delicious community about what's been going on. Given that we've undergone a lot of changes and have a lot more in store in the future, I want to resolve to be better about communicating.

For starters, even though it feels like we've been doing less feature work, we still have been doing weekly releases to improve performance (the new Firefox extension gets a new revision every few days it seems). Going forward, we're going to be talking much more about what's changed, where the bugs are, and in general, more explicit about what we're doing.

While we've done some integration work with Yahoo, it's now time to do more meaningful joint development work to take advantage of all the great technology that a company that does one hojillion hits a day has at its disposal. Doing this is pretty involved, and we're going to take the opportunity to redo things like the UI and fix many of the less-beloved historical design quirks that still linger from my original implementation. Doing such large changes in the dark is, I think, a huge mistake, and I want to try to have a phased rollout so that everyone can get comfortable as we figure out what the future product looks like.

Late last year, our team was joined by Abe's team, whose previous project was the backend for the new Yahoo Photos and MyWeb 1 before that. These guys know scalability like nobody's business. On the front-end, we've been joined by Erik and his team of all-around asskickers. And Patrick has built a team to develop a new set of browser plugins that allow for much deeper browser integration. I have high hopes that our expanded team will be able to release a new and tastier delicious someday in the not-too distant future.

We've still got many questions to answer -- Commas or spaces? In what way should we allow logins from Yahoo!? How should a next-generation API work? Should we do something about the dots in the name? and many more, and I look forward to figuring these things out with you in the future.

Here's to a new year and a lot more conversation.

Being a blogger, one of my long-standing wishlist items for del.icio.us has been to find some way to get more of what's going on here to show up out there. Instead of just simple links, I've wanted to get a bit of peek through the keyhole to see just what "save to del.icio.us" means and what others are doing with it on my pages. So, I'm happy to cross this item off my list and introduce a new version of the usual social bookmarking button that we're dubbing the 'Tagometer.'
what's a tagometer?

These are some snapshots of what the Tagometer looks like. Like simpler static widgets, it includes a button inviting readers to bookmark your page on del.icio.us. The Tagometer opens things up from there - using a JSON data feed from del.icio.us, the Tagometer includes an up-to-date count of others who've already bookmarked the page, as well as a fresh list of the top tags applied.

Visitors can click on the count to see more detail on who bookmarked your page, when they did it, and how they tagged it. The list of tags shows visitors why your page is interesting, and clicking on a tag takes them to similar sites on del.icio.us.
how do i get one?
At the time of this launch, you've got an out-of-box choice of two CSS-based presentations shown in screenshot form above:
1. A rectangular badge, suitable for sidebars and inset information displays.
2. A single line, intended for use at the end of stories and blog entries.
Whichever one you choose, you can copy our example code for either of these and just paste it into your pages or templates. The Tagometer will automatically populate itself from the location and title it finds on the page where you've given it a home.

If you've got a bit more advanced DOM scripting, JSON, and CSS chops - try taking a look under the hood. The folks over at FeedBurner, for instance, have already built a new FeedFlare unit that incorporates the JSON feed data. We're trying out a few new things here that should make customizing the Tagometer easier for web developers, while at the same time working to maintain a simple copy-and-paste option.

Try it out, let us know what you think, and tell us if you've got any ideas on improving this new tool.

Because we don't all get together enough and talk about important nerd topics, we and our Yahoo! compatriots have started a series of microconferences, entitled confab.yahoo, which will be open to all and be held in the evenings and early in the week (so you don't have the excuse of needing to go to important parties).

The first in this series, on Dec 13 at 5:30pm, is a discussion on Prediction Markets, moderated by James Surowiecki. Please sign up and join me next week.

A prediction market is like a stock market for ideas or information. The market rewards good information whether it comes from elites or the masses. Prediction markets have built a track record of besting pundits and pollsters when it comes to predicting everything from political elections to quarterly sales figures.

Join us for a public “how to” session on prediction markets¹ moderated by James Surowiecki, New Yorker columnist and best-selling author of The Wisdom of Crowds.

Bo Cowgill from Google, Leslie Fine from HP, Todd Proebsting from Microsoft, and Dave Pennock from Yahoo! will describe how they are using prediction markets to aid corporate forecasting and decision making.

Other speakers include Chris Hibbert, the developer of Zocalo, an open source prediction market platform; Adam Siegel, the co-founder of InklingMarkets.com, a Paul Graham yCombinator startup, and Robin Hanson, the visionary economist and inventor whose pioneering work paved the way.

The event will emphasize practical lessons and hands-on advice. After brief presentations from each speaker, Surowiecki will open up the session for discussion with the audience.

We had our party this week, and thanks to all the folks who came to help us celebrate our million user milestone and third birthday. I had a great time meeting everyone and we all were flabbergasted at the response, we were expecting maybe 100 to show up and we had at least twice as many!

A big thanks to everyone who could make it- but especially to Dan and Clara who created a meta version of our cake icon in the form of an actual cake! Finally, we're sorry that we haven't invented the beaming technology that could bring all our users to Sunnyvale, but we do have photos. Check them out at [del.icio.us] !

Not even a week after turning three, del.icio.us has just passed the mark of 1 million registered users! That’s more than triple the number of users we had just nine months ago. We can hardly believe it ourselves (although the smell of smoke coming from the server rack seems to eerily confirm it). Thanks to each and every one of you for making all this possible. Now we have one more thing to celebrate at the party next week...
